Bold outlines and strong contrast are what keep Japanese work readable for decades, so we plan the size of each element with that in mind rather than squeezing detail into a small space.
For sleeves and back pieces, we map the whole area first. Each session then builds towards the finished piece, whether you choose black and grey or colour.

A single piece can be planned to connect into a sleeve in future sessions.
Both work for Japanese style; we advise based on skin tone and placement.
Yes, but Japanese elements need space to stay clear. A single koi, flower or mask works from about palm size; full scenes with background need a larger area.
A full sleeve is usually completed over several sessions, with healing time between them. We plan the number of sessions with you at the consultation.
Traditionally, koi represent perseverance and transformation, and dragons represent strength and protection. We can adapt the composition to the meaning you want.
Both are traditional. Black and grey ages very predictably; colour gives the classic bold look. We recommend based on the design, your skin tone and placement.
